High Heels and Umbrellas

In the thirsty darkness you lie
awake listening

to a hundred
taps on your
window as you

fall to sleep.
A river of

umbrellas
floats by in the dark

past your curtains:
people come and go
in heels like rain
that cut away at the street.

You are a stranger
and they are strangers:
the world is upside-down.

You are cold.
You hide under the
sheets like women hiding

under umbrellas
out in the pouring rain.
